ESSENTIAL COLOUR GUIDE FOR THE PERFECT CAPSULE WINTER WARDROBE

Versatility is Key

I am not a fashion stylist but, if you were to ask me what makes a good caspule wardrobe, I would say that it is foremost versatility.

Versatility is a topic that I studied in depth when I developed The Morphbag concept of adaptability for styling and use.

The conclusion of my research was that the foundation of versatility is simplicity.

We want a wardrobe that reflects our personality, enhances our natural beauty and dresses us with comfort and style.

In order to achieve simplicity, we need to look at the following factors:

1. Selection of wardrobe items that can work as both dressed-up or dressed-down and that easily morph with my activities from day to night,

2. Consideration of comfort and practicality; garments or shoes that are too tight or handbags with thin straps that dig into our shoulders are distracting and impact our confidence,

3. Inclusion of tonalities for key items that can be combined universally across outfits,

4. Knowing our personal colour palette (free quiz here) so that we can choose accents in the correct colours, which make our complexion glow.

Base Colours and Secondary Colours are Essential

A capsule wardrobe is defined by a number of few essential staples that can be coordinated with each other to a multitude of outfits.

Therefore, with versatility being key, it is helpful to start by determining the colour palette for your wardrobe.

The ideal colour palette includes base colours, secondary neutrals and accents by your colour type. Your colour type is determined by Colour Analysis, also called "Skin Tone Colour Matching" or "Colour Seasons" and is the process of determining the colours that best suit your individual natural complexion. The right colours will bring out your natural beauty and make your skin look more radiant.

I recommend choosing base colours for your wardrobe items that you will use the most.

Choosing your Coat

The reason for this is that the basic colours: black, navy, neutral and ivory/white are the shades that will go with most accent colours.

Choosing base colours or secondary neutrals for your coats and blazers is very helpful for mixing and matching with your outfits.

Opt for cool tones (blue, grey, and black) or warm tones (beige, camel, ivory) depending on your colour type.

Note:

Blue is a universally flattering colour.

Black and white are not colours in technical terms but shades and although they are considered to suit everybody, they tend to drain people with a warm skin tone. Warm skin types should opt for blue and ivory instead.

Styling with Colour and Colour Accents

If you love colour and found out your colour type, combine your base colours and secondary neutrals in the tonalities that suit you best (cool or warm tones) and combine with a "pop" of colour as an accessory.
